Why Are Protein Prices So High in NZ?
Here's What's Actually Happening.
Raw WPC80 has nearly doubled — from ~$24/kg to $40+/kg locally. We bought stock early and pass the savings on. Below — what's driving prices up and the best deals we can do right now.
Bookmark this page. We can't promise we'll always have deals like the ones below — but we'll do our best to mitigate these price increases and keep this page updated with where things actually stand. Real costs, real prices, no spin.
We'll be putting our protein prices up from April 1st.
We've held prices as long as we can, but the raw cost increases have been too significant to keep absorbing. The deals below are based on stock we bought months ago at last year's costs — once it's gone, the new prices will reflect what whey actually costs right now. If you've been thinking about stocking up, this is the time to do it.
Best Protein Deals in NZ Right Now
100% whey protein. At $44.03/kg, you're paying roughly what the raw WPC80 powder costs today — manufacturing, flavouring, testing, and packaging are all absorbed at this price.
NZ-made protein blend with 21g protein per serve. Not a pure whey — it's a blend, which is how the per-kg price stays lower. Good option if you want protein volume on a budget.
NZ-made whey with 20% isolate in the blend. WPI is even harder to source than WPC right now — having it in the mix at this price is genuinely rare.
Protein Prices in NZ: How Fast They've Climbed
We flagged this in December. When overseas pricing hit $47.74/kg, we said NZ would follow. It did. Local WPC80 has since climbed into the $40s — and that's just the raw powder before it's manufactured, flavoured, tested, and packaged into the bag you buy.
Why Is Protein So Expensive in NZ Right Now?
This isn't a temporary blip. It's a structural shift in global whey supply and demand. Here are the five forces driving prices up — and why they're not going away soon.
You've probably noticed fewer protein options on shelves. It's about to get worse.
That's not your imagination. It's not just cost pressure — it's a supply problem. You can't stock what you can't source. And we're now hearing that multiple major brands are discontinuing protein lines entirely because the costs and availability just don't stack up anymore.
- Major brands are pulling protein products altogether. Not just trimming flavours — discontinuing entire lines. When brands can't secure raw whey at a price that makes sense, the product just stops existing.
- Smaller brands are gone or going. Margins are too thin at these raw costs. Some have quietly stopped restocking and aren't coming back.
- What's left is consolidating fast. Same big international brands, same vanilla-chocolate-strawberry lineup. Far less variety than even six months ago.
- We're keeping variety while we can. NZ-made whey, protein blends, international brands — but some of the products on this page genuinely may not be available once current stock clears.

Common Questions About Protein Prices in NZ
Why has whey protein gone up in price in NZ?
Global supply shortage. Raw WPC80 has climbed from ~$24/kg to $40+/kg locally since late 2024. Demand from prescription weight-loss treatments, US suppliers being sold out, and limited manufacturing capacity worldwide are the main drivers.
Will protein prices go down in 2026?
Unlikely in the short term. New manufacturing capacity is being built globally, but plants take years to come online. Demand continues to outpace supply. Prices may stabilise but a return to pre-2024 levels isn't expected soon.
What is the cheapest protein powder in NZ right now?
MuscleTech Whey Gold at $44.03/kg for 100% whey — that's roughly raw ingredient cost for a finished product. Pack Nutrition Feral Whey is $35.67/kg but it's a blend, not pure whey. NoWhey WPC drops to $37.46/kg when you buy 3. Athletech Pro 6 at $41.97 (30% off) is the cheapest 2lb blend at $46.27/kg. Always compare price per kilo and check the protein type.
What's the difference between WPC, WPI, and blends?
WPC (concentrate) is the most affordable — around 80% protein. WPI (isolate) is 90%+ protein with less fat and lactose, but costs more. Blends mix protein sources to balance cost and quality. Feral Whey is a blend, Whey Gold is whey, NZ Whey has 20% isolate.
Why are there fewer protein options on shelves in NZ?
It's a supply problem — and it's getting worse. When raw ingredients cost $40+/kg, margins disappear. We're now seeing multiple major brands discontinue protein lines entirely, not just trim flavours. Smaller companies have pulled back or gone quiet. Retailers can't stock what they can't source. Expect even less variety in the months ahead.
How do I compare value between protein powders?
Always check the price per kilo. A $70 bag and a $100 tub can have very different value once you account for weight. The chart above shows per-kg pricing so you can compare directly.
